ARDEN-ARCADE, Calif. — The future of the vacant former Macy’s building at Country Club Plaza remains contested as a developer pursues a plan to convert the store into self-storage and retail space, while also proposing apartments on the wider property.
What the county records show
Sacramento County’s Planning Projects Viewer identifies application PLNP2024-00204 for the former department store at 3500 El Camino Avenue. The application describes conversion of a vacant approximately 156,000-square-foot, four-story former Macy’s into a mini-storage building with roughly 106,600 square feet of rentable storage and associated retail.
The planning viewer currently labels the application Pending and does not list a final hearing date. That status is more reliable than assuming approval from an earlier projected hearing month.
Why neighbors objected
At an August 2026 community meeting, the Arden-Arcade Community Planning Advisory Council voted 5–0 against recommending the storage use, according to local news coverage. Residents expressed concerns about the suitability of more storage space, area traffic and future development. The developer argued that adaptive reuse could help preserve a long-vacant building and support further reinvestment.
Coverage of the redevelopment also described a separate proposed apartment building on the former store’s parking area, with 174 units cited in August reports. That housing concept is distinct from the storage permit’s exact scope and may change through the review process.
What is actually decided
A community advisory recommendation is not necessarily the final decision of the county Planning Commission. Neither an application nor a public debate means the proposed apartments have been constructed or the storage operation has opened.
Residents can follow the official county case page, which lists planner contact doberneckn@saccounty.gov and project documents. The listed application remains pending in the available record.
